This holiday season was really busy for me as I finished up 10 quilts and brought them to the hospital. Every few months, my son has a cardiology appointment at...
Why Quilts for Cardiac Kids?
Named for my Son, who is a heart warrior, and for all other heart warriors born with congenital heart disease. Many children with CHD spend a lot of time in the hospital and undergo multiple surgeries for their heart conditions.
My son was diagnosed with heart failure at three months old. I have been humbled to be a witness to everything he has gone through. He was just a baby that should have been home swaddled up, cozy in bed, but instead he was covered in wires, oxygen tubes, feeding tubes, and in a room with loud constant beeping noises with people constantly coming and going. A heartbreaking reality for too many families in the Pediatric Cardiac ward. I would walk down the halls and see other parents with the same grief and exhaustion I had reflected on my own face.
One day, I met a mother down the hall. She told me her son's story, and told me she had never brought her son home, and she didn't even have a blanket for him. I was emotional for them...The next time I went home, I brought back a handmade quilt for her son. She loved it. When I visited her again, the quilt was on her son's bed and she was smiling. I became inspired to give more quilts to more children, more families, more rooms.
Who am I?? ?
A mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister...but mostly I love to be called mom by my three little ones. I haven't always had a passion for quilting, I was inspired to make a quilt after traveling to Alaska in 2023 and seeing the beauty and practicality of them. Since then, I have been toning my skills and constantly learning new techniques. Along with quilting, I like to hike with my family, play tennis, play music, and cook.
I started donating quilts in the hospital after my son was diagnosed with heart failure at 3 months old. He had heart surgery at 5 months old and is continuously monitored by his care team at Duke Hospital and with our at home machines. My son will need at least one more heart surgery at some point and my passion to bring quilts to the hospital is just starting!
